THUMB SPRAINS

When the thumb is bent past its natural position, ligaments can tear, causing a thumb sprain. Often a thumb sprain occurs through sport where the thumb has been jammed or pulled back awkwardly. The most common injury is a Skier’s thumb (Gamekeeper’s Thumb).

WRIST FRACTURES

A Wrist Fracture is essentially a break in one of the bones in the wrist. The most common bone to fracture is the radius.

SCAPHOID FRACTURES

The scaphoid is one of the small bones in the wrist. A scaphoid fracture is usually caused by a fall on an outstretched hand. If missed and not treated early, it may not heal (Scaphoid non-union).

GANGLION CYST

Ganglion Cysts are fluid filled bumps that appear next to tendons and joints. Most often they occur at the start of the wrist and are generally painless.

CUBITAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome comes from increased pressure on the ulnar nerve at the elbow. It can cause pain, tingling and general weakness in different parts of the arm and hand.

DUPUYTRENS CONTRACTURE –Xiaflex (Collagenase) accredited

This is a hand condition where knots of tissue (which feel like small bumps) form under the skin of your palm and in some cases can pull fingers into a slightly bent position. It can be difficult to straighten the fingers which can make daily activities a challenge.

Dr Tawfik is a Xiaflex (Collagenase) accredited practitioner and this may be an option for some cases.

De QUERVAIN’S TENOSYNOVITIS

This condition affects the tendons on the side of your wrist, near the thumb. It can cause pain when you move your wrist, try to hold something tight, perform repetitive tasks with the hand or wrist or even when you lift a baby.

TRIGGER FINGER AND TRIGGER THUMB

Trigger Finger or Trigger Thumb occurs when there is inflammation around the tendons which can cause the finger or thumb to feel locked when it is bent.

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME (CTS)

Carpal tunnel syndrome is associated with pain, tingling, numbness and general weakness in your hand due to pressure on the median nerve in your wrist. The increased pressure on the nerve creates the swelling which leads to the pain and other symptoms.
